- The Anza Borrego Foundation (ABF) works within the Anza Borrego State Park to create inclusive educational programs for all ages. The ABF also works closely with UCI, leading the way in looking at unique desert-life adaptations that may inform our work and offer clues to managing these changes' impact effectively.
- My role is to help design an education program focused on grades three, seven, and high school that will incorporate the work at the research center and the ideas coming out of our teacher symposiums.
- Our third-grade program will focus on teacher training symposiums (in the park) informing the lessons teachers can use in their classrooms.
- Our first symposium is scheduled for March 3 - 6, 2023. We are looking for 24 third through fifth-grade teachers interested in learning more about the desert and willing to learn ways they can influence the next generation of visitors on climate change and conservation. Our participants will also be part of an inaugural education group that will provide input into this program's path. The three-day symposium will consist of one full day "in the park" learning from William Terry Hunefeld, a certified volunteer naturalist for California State Parks https://www.inaturalist.org/users/231709 and Dan McCamish, the Senior Environmental Scientist and Natural Resources Supervisor for the Colorado Desert District for California State Parks. Saturday evening will be stargazing in the park. On Sunday, participants will review and offer input into the third-grade curriculum. We will provide all meals and lodging at the UCI Research Center in the park near where we will build our new student center.
Educators interested in applying for this opportunity or who would like more information are invited to fill out an application here.
We are asking each participant for a $60 commitment fee.
